Three. Two. One! We all counted down before we put the mentos in the soda, therefore launching our soda rockets. The soda reached a height that was three times the size of our little elementary school bodies. Everyone stared in awe at how high the soda actually reached. Although I was never too great at science, the experiments we did were more than enough to keep me from hating science. On the other hand, I was great at math and problem solving and my passion for math never ceased to stop increasing. My time at Lawton Alternative School inspired me to pursue a career in the science and math field. Growing up, my parents have always told me to become a doctor or a lawyer, but these occupations never sparked an interest. I know my parents mean …show more content…
Not all science experiments work out the first time, but I kept persevering and eventually succeeded. I remember when we were out in the yard one day trying to launch a projectile to hit the target area, but my team and I missed a couple times. We had to figure out the problem and adapt to our circumstances. Ultimately, after much trial and error, we hit our target; we felt so accomplished. My fiery passion for math started in middle school. It was a hot day, everyone was sweating, and the teacher was lecturing. As I was doing a problem on the board, I realized that once you understand the concept, the problem is easy. The numbers fit together and there will always be a definite answer for any number of problems one does. After this realization, I noticed that math really was not as difficult as others say it is. The simple idea of “PEMDAS” or “solving for the variable” was made difficult by the students themselves, not the teachers.
Even though I am not planning on becoming a lawyer or a doctor, or even know specifically what I want to do, I have a general area in mind. In spite of what my parents hoped I would become, I decided to follow my dreams and do what I enjoy - math and science. I can not believe that the path I am going down today has been influenced by a simple science experiment or math

If you asked my mom what my free time consisted of as a tiny tot, she would probably talk about my affinity for documentaries, specifically nature and space. While other kids would run home to catch the latest episode of Spongebob, I was rushing home to catch the latest episode of the nature documentary that was being showcased. My love of nature and animals led me to aspiring to be a marine biologist. My area of interest has shifted a bit, but is still in the realm of biology. I now dream of majoring in zoology, and becoming a zoologist.…

Growing up with limited proficiency in English, it was quite difficult for me to find a school subject of my interest. I never really had the chance to know what it felt like to be passionate about an area of study until the later years of my academic career. It was the day where the water cycle was taught in my fourth grade science class. I fell in love with the fact that everything, even the concept itself, fits perfectly and logically. I felt like I did not have to master the English language thoroughly in order to understand the concepts.…

During my journey in finding the right career for me, I realized that there are two types of people: the ones who know early on what they want to be, and the people who transition from numerous options over a short period of time. I was the second option. As a child, I grew up having various kinds of career ideas. I started off wanting to be a banker because of my skills in handling and monitoring my money, then I wanted to be a lawyer (I still haven’t figured out why). At about fifth grade, I thought I wanted to be a chemist since I was taking many more science classes.…

In middle school students are pressured to decide about future career goals. By the time I reached high school, my classmates and I were expected to know what career paths we were headed towards; along with most of my other fellow students I did not. In one of my honors class’, I had to write a paper about a future career I might see myself in. I had no idea where I was headed, or what direction to go in, so I asked my mother. Her response was, “ What do you love most?”…

Science is one of the few disciplines that continues to develop in our society, whether it is through technology or new discoveries. When considering my own relationship to the world of science, I often consider the past science classes I’ve taken. Thinking back to learning about the scientific method in elementary school to constructing science fair projects for six consecutive years had me realize how far I had come without really questioning science. The year I had made it past the first phase of the science fair was in the fourth grade. My dad and I had constructed a clay model of the human ear.…

Pursuing the Dream When you find yourself as a person and decide what you wish to pursue in life, you don’t normally look back years past to a young age where a favorite hobby was brought to life. Many jobs can’t be linked to what you choose to partake in as a second grader. Despite the rarity, this is exactly what I found doing when my parents started questioning me of possible career options. Up until recently have I realized what my true dream job would be and although I now accept it, doesn’t mean that it is a practical move for me to earn a living on.…

I’ve always been curious; I like knowing how things work and why they work. I’d tinker with a computer or take toys apart to fix them or simply for fun. The Importance Of My Life

Ironically, the funny story is for most of my early life I was so sure that I would take a similar route towards the math and sciences stream like most of my family, especially with how my parents dedicated a considerable amount of effort ensuring I would be proficient in those skills. With their help, I did pretty well, got amazing grades in the honours roll, invited into the advanced science class, and aspired to major in aeronautical engineering to work for NASA at the ripe age of 6. At this point, I had a one-track mind thinking that you were either good at arts or sciences, and that you couldn’t do both as you were destined to be in either one, but I was wrong. I am fortunate that I am able to have interest and succeed (at varying yet acceptable rates) in no matter what path I took, but it took me years to truly listen to what my heart called to…
