Define Osteokinematics
observable movemetns of bones in space with the DISTAL end as the reference.
define SPIN
movement around a defined mechanical axis (head of femur, etc)
define SWING
movement in a diagonal or oblique patterns
two types of SWING. what are they?
Pure Swing- straight line. not really functional

Impure Swing- has more of an arc. (legs and arms swinging). Is more functional.
Define Arthrokinematics
Unobservable movements between adjacent joint surfaces (roll, glide, and spin)
when can Roll occur?
when the two articulating surfaces are incongruent
when can Glide occur?
when the two articulating surfaces are congruent and flat or congruent and curved.
Glide only occurs ________ and can be referred to as ________ or ________ glide
involuntarily
translation
translatory
Rolling and gliding usually surface simultaneously but no necessarily in proportion to one another. The more congruent the articulation- the more the _______; the more the Incongruent the articulation- the more the ______
gliding
rolling
3 rules to know:

Roll Role
Concave rule
Convex rule
roll rule- roll always occurs in the direction of bone movement ( ant./post. or sup/inf)

Concave rule- in relationship to the CONCAVE surface, roll and glide occur in the SAME direction (will be mostly glide)

Convex rule- in relationship to the CONVEX surface, roll and glide occur in the OPPOSITE directino.
how does each end of each phalynx look like?
top is convex, bottom is concave
Joint- distal Interphalangeal
concave- distal phalnyx
convex- middle phalynx

flexion- anterior roll and anterior glide of the distal on the middle phalynx.

Extension- Posterior roll and posterior glide of the distal phangeal on the middle.

Joint- Metacarpophalngeal
Concave- proximal phalynx
Convex- Metacarpal

flexion- Anterior roll and anterior glide of the proximal phanageal on the metacarpals

Extension- Posterior roll and posterior glide of the proximal phangeal on the metacarpal
Joint- Radiocarpal
Concave- radius
Convex- carpals

Flexion- Anterior roll and Posterior Glide of the carpals on the radius

Extension- posterior roll and Anterior glide of the carpals on the radius
Joint- Radioulnar (proximal)
Concave- ulna
Convex- radius

Pronation (anterior movement)- anterior roll and posterior glide of the radius on the ulna.

Supination (posterior movement)- posterior roll and anterior glide of the radius on the ulna.
Joint- Radioulnar (distal)
Concave- radius
Convex- ulna

Pronation- anterior roll and anterior glide of the radius on the ulna

Supination- Posterior roll and posterior glide of the radius on the ulna.
Joint- Iliofemoral (this has more spins. Doesn't have a normal roll and glide rule)
Concave- acetabalum
Convex- Head of femur

Abduction- Superior roll and inferior glide of the femur on the acetabulum.
Joint- Glenohumeral
Concave- glenoid
Convex- head of humerus

Flexion- Posterior roll and anterior glide of the humerus on the glenoid.

Extension- Anterior rolland posterior glide of the humerus on the glenoid.

Abduction- Superior roll and inferior glide of the humerus on the glenoid.
Joint- Tibiofemoral
Concave- Tibia
Convex- Femur

Flexion- posterior roll and posterior glide of the tibia on the femur.

Extension- anterior roll and anterior glide of the tibia on the femur.

Joint- Talotibial
Concave- tibia
Convex- talus

Plantarflexion- posterior roll and anterior glide of the talus and the tibia.

Dorsiflexion- Anterior roll and posterior glide of the talus on the tibia.

during a squat, what is happening at the ankle Joint?
Anterior roll and Anterior glide of the tibia on the talus.
During a pull-up on the way up, what's occurring at the elbow joint (humeroulnar)?
(refer everything back to anatomical!!)

Concave- Ulna
Convex- Humerus

Anterior roll and posterior glide of the humerus on the ulna
