Complicated Skeletons

Decent Essays
Briefly identify and discuss bones of the appendicular and axial skeletons.
• The axial skeleton consists of the following bones. The skull is made of:
• There are 2 parietal bones that form the superior and lateral parts of the skull.
• There are 2 temporal bones that form the inferolateral parts of the skull.
• The frontal bone forms what we know as the forehead (Cancer 2016).
• The occipital bone is posterior making up most of the base of the skull.
• The ethmoid bone forms the anterior cranial fossa, a portion of the nasal septum, and the roof of the nasal cavity/lateral walls.
• The sphenoid is a butterfly shaped bone-forming part of the orbit. It also articulates with other bones in the cranial (Cancer 2016).
• Auditory ossicles contain

• 1 mandible known as the strongest and largest bone in the facial that makes up the lower jaw.
• There are 2 nasal bones that are thin, forming the bridge of the nose (Cancer 2016).
• There are 2 platine bones that form the posterior portion of the bony roof of the hard palate, small portion of the nasal cavity and orbit walls.
• There are 2 lacrimal bones that form the medial orbit wall allowing tears to drain from the eye to the nasal cavity (Cancer 2016).
• The vomer is slim and plow shaped forming a portion of the nasal septum.

Hyoid bone
The hyoid bone is not part of the skull. It is located inferior to the mandible. It is the only bone that does not articulate with other bones. However, it functions as a base for the tongue and neck muscles (Cancer 2016).

The vertebral column is made up of:
• There are 7 cervical vertebrae with: a small body (short spinous process, and projecting posteriorly), transverse processes (consisting of foramina), and the most range of motion of all the regions of the spine. The atlas and axis are Atlas C-1 and C-2 (Cancer,

• There are 16 carpals making up the wrist.
• The metacarpals are made up of 5 bones within the hand that are linked to the carpals and phalanges.
• There are 28 phalanges that make up the fingers.

The pelvic girdle includes:
• There are 2 ilium bones it is a part of the OS coxae other words known as the hip bone (Cast Online, 2016).
• There are 2 pubis bones that are anterior inferior part of the OS coxae.
• The acetabulum is not a bone, however it is where the ilium, ischium, and pubis meet (Cast Online, 2016).

The lower extremity includes:
• There are 2 femur bones, which are the largest, strongest, and longest bone in the body.
• There are 2 tibia bones is one of the two bones that make up the lower part of the leg, is the larger of the two, and supports most of the weight.
• There are 2 fibula bones is one of the two bones that make up the lower part of the leg, the smaller of the two, and parallel to the tibia.
• There are 2 patella bones that are known as sesamoid bones.
• There are 14 tarsals that make up the

The hand and finger bones of Majungasaurus, lacked the characteristic pits and grooves where claws and tendons would normally attach, and its finger bones were fused together, indicating that the hand was immobile. In 2012, a better specimen was described, showing that the lower arm was robust, though short, and that the hand contained four metatarsals and four, probably inflexible and very reduced, fingers, with small claws on the second and third finger. Like other abelisaurids, the hindlimbs were stocky and short compared to body length. Majungasaurus is perhaps most distinctive for its skull ornamentation, including the swollen and fused nasals and the frontal horn. Other ceratosaurs, including Carnotaurus, Rajasaurus, and Ceratosaurus itself bore crests on the head.…

Transversal processes is a protuberance where that feature projects outward from the side of the vertebrae. Both skulls are consist of a cranium, the space where the brain is located and protected, a muzzle, the face and nose of the Equidae, and the mouth and jaws. When observing the Eohippus skull, the eyes are located at a nearly equal distance between the end of the cranium and the end of the muzzle and the mouth had very few gaps between teeth. However, as evolution progressed to the Mesohippus, the distance between the eyes and the end of the muzzle had increased and as a result, larger gaps were observed between the front and back sets of teeth. The nasal bone between the two nostrils became thinner and no longer reached the muzzle.…

Appendicular muscles help the pelvic girdles, pectoral girdles, and the limbs. The appendicular muscles stabilize and positions the pectoral/pelvic girdles producing movement to the upper and lower limbs. The two major groups of appendicular muscles consist of the muscles of the shoulders/upper limbs and the muscles of the pelvis/lower limbs. Muscles of the shoulders and upper limbs are divided into four categories: muscles that position the pectoral girdle, muscles that move the arm, muscles that move the forearm/hand, and muscles that move the hand/fingers. Muscles that position the pectoral girdle include: trapezius (it is superficial covering the back and neck up to the base of the skull inserting on the clavicles and scapular spines), rhomboid/levator scapulae (it is deep to the trapezius attaching to cervical/thoracic vertebrae inserting on the scapular border), serratus anterior (located on the chest originating along the ribs inserting on anterior scapular margin), subclavius (originates on the ribs and inserts on the clavicle), and pectoralis minor (attaches to the scapula).…

Jesus E Fernandez WCIV 10100-H Dr. LePree Fall 2016 Lucy; the most important discovery of the 20th Century Ever since discussions of human ancestry began, many people believed that Europe was the home of the first ancestors of humankind up until the end of the 20th century. An American paleoanthropologist by the name of Dr. Donald Carl Johanson, visited Ethiopia as part of the International Afar Research Expedition in 1973, as a result of this expedition, Dr. Johanson found a knee of a hominid that turned out to be about 3 million years old. Because of its size and the shape, he concluded that this knee belonged to an individual who was bipedal; a species that walks on two legs. A year after his first finding, Johanson went back to Ethiopia with his own expedition team to find what will later be called, Lucy, the Australopithecus Afarensis.…

Those being a finger bone, two teeth, and a toe bone. Although these bones do give us some clues to their physical appearance, and even the gender of the extinct Denisovan. The finger bone, for example is strangely large and broad and belonged to a female, allowing us to infer the Denisovans were possibly a similar physical type compared to Neanderthals. The tooth, however has not provided researchers with any new discoveries on its morphological characteristics, other than having similarities to Homo erectus teeth (Reich, Genetic). However the last finding of the toe bone has revealed through extensive testing that Homo sapiens sapiens did in fact interbreed with Denisovans and have hybrid offspring (Zimmer, toe).…

The adult human skeletal system consists of 206 bones, in which are held together by a network of ligaments, tendons and cartilage that connect them together. Besides movement the skeleton also provides protection to vital organs such as our brain, our heart, lungs and abdominal organs. Although our skeleton provides us with such protection it is still prone to injury, wear and tear, infections, tumors and other conditions that can damage bone and become life threatening. OSTEOMYELITIS Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone or bone marrow; inflammation due to infection. Osteomyelitis is caused by a bacterial infection.…
