William Shakespeare was baptized on April 26, 1564. No one is absolutely sure when he

was actually born. It is guessed that he was born on April 21 or April 23, 1564 since children

were usually baptized a few days after they were born. He could have been born April 22 & died

April 22 or 23, 1616. William Shakespeare was quite possibly both born & passed on Jeremaya

His father, John Shakespeare

was an apprentice tanner of leathers who moved to Stratford around 1532 and made his fortune

dealing farm products and wool. John was also Stratford’s official ale tester. He purchased

several properties in the Stratford area, one on Greenville St. and another on Henley St. Sadly,

John Shakespeare lost most of his property in old age due to inability to pay taxes. John used a

pair of glovers compasses as his signature on all official documents, while Mary used a running

horse, because they were illiterate. Neither of his parents could read or write. William was the

third of eight children, four sisters, three of which didn’t live past age eight. Two of his sisters

died as babies before he was born, so his parents were very careful about the heath of their

firstborn son. His sister, Joan, who lived to be seventy-seven eventually outlived all seven of her

siblings. He had three brothers all of whom lived to become adults though sadly, before his own

death in 1616, William buried all three of them.

William married 26 year old Anne Hathaway, who was 3 months pregnant, at the age of

17. They had three childrenJ Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet, named after

Shakespeare’s baker friend, died in his youth from illness around age 11. Shakespeare’s baker

also named his son William in return for the endearment.
