William Shakespeare has come to be known as the world’s greatest playwright, but numerous theories have been proffered that Shakespeare did not in fact write his own plays. Many famous writers including Mark Twain have doubted that given his lack of formal education Shakespeare would have been capable of writing the works he is credited with authoring. Because of the lack of definitive proof, it is very easy to speculate that Shakespeare did not write his own plays. Shakespeare grew up in Stratford upon Avon with a loving mother and father. Shakespeare’s family was not the wealthiest and he was considered a commoner. Because of this, Shakespeare did not attend grammar school when he was younger. Bacon had many qualifications to write poetry. “As a leading figure of the English Renaissance, [Bacon] certainly had the biography for it” (Document A). Bacon studied at Cambridge, and was also a very famous philosopher and inventor. His travels also took him to many locations that Shakespeare’s plays were set in. Because Bacon was so high up in social order, he wanted to conceal his identity because being a playwright could easily end a career in politics. The first notion made about Bacon writing Shakespeare’s plays was made by Delia Bacon. She said that they also needed to stay anonymous because they were “a little clique of disappointed and defeated politicians who undertook to organize a popular opposition against the government.” (Document A) “According to her, drama was politics by other means: “Driven from one field, they showed themselves in another,” she wrote. “Driven from the open field, they fought in secret.” (Document A) Miss Bacon claimed that many of the plays contained codes and ciphers related to politics and about the true authors of the plays. Because there is such great belief that Bacon did write Shakespeare, a student created a cipher wheel to decrypt the meaning of the messages in some of the plays. “The idea that Bacon did write Shakespeare’s plays have been backed up greatly with other evidence and theories as represented by the Francis Bacon Society, founded in 1866.”
