Another Domestic Terrorist threat is the Eco-terrorist and animal rights extremists, two groups under this category include the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), founded in the late 70’s early 80’s, and the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), founded in the late 60’s. The FBI considers these groups to be some of the largest domestic threats of terrorism because they have carried out numerous crimes (over 2,000) resulting in huge losses (more than $110 million) and they have become increasingly violent towards a wide range of victims, including threatening the homes and families of employees and customers of corporations they are against. (FBI, 2009) Their targets are usually corporations in the forestry, housing, automobile industries, medical research labs and product testing facilities and other similar organizations that the groups consider a threat to animals or the environment. Their methods of attack include “arsons, bombings, and acts of vandalism and harassment”. So far, there have been no reports of injuries related to Eco-terrorism attacks but with an increase in activity, it will inevitably happen. (ADL, 2005)
