Jem was greatly influenced by how the coloreds looked up to him and scout not for just being white. They respected him and scout cause of the deed his father had done. Jem finally realized that Atticus took the case because he was doing the right thing.
The second character is Atticus. Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout. His wife had died when Scout was a baby so he hired Calpurnia a colored lady that respected the finch family very much. Atticus was very grateful that Calpurnia was able to help him take care of the kids when he had to go to town for work. In the beginning of the book, it made it sound like Atticus didn't have much of a childhood from what he told his children. He said he never had a gun and his father didn't like them. In the middle of the story, there's a part about a mad dog and the sheriff tell Atticus to shoot it. After Atticus has shot the dog Jem wants to ask him a question later when he gets home. All of the finches neighbors like Atticus and makes the neighborhood seem peaceful and one of the neighbors tell jem and scout that he is one of the deadliest shots. Atticus takes tom Robinson's case because he knows it's the right thing to do and he was a friend of Calpurnia. He knew that they were not going to be able to win and when they didn't they would appeal the hearing and try again.
