One character that has taken care of Scout and influenced her is Calpurnia. She influences Scout by being strict and by showing her how colored people are different. Throughout the story, there were many times when Atticus and Jem had to step in to make Scout apologize. Jem has grown up and he knows that he needs to have his sister be respectful toward others. Jem understands that Aunt Alexandra came to live with them to help Atticus with the children. He teaches Scout that Alexandra is trying to help and that she needs to respect her. This is also shown when Lee wrote, “‘Come on, Scout,’ he whispered. ‘Don’t pay any attention to her, just hold your head high and be a gentleman’”(Lee, 135). This is when Jem and Scout passed by and they got yelled at by Mrs. Dubose. Although she hates on Atticus because he’s defending a black person at court, Jem tells Scout to ignore her. Jem influenced Scout to take criticism and not fight back even though it can be frustrating. Scout also didn’t know why Mrs. Dubose is being rude until Atticus told her that Mrs. Dubose had been sick for a long time.
