The True Meaning of Halloween

Halloween is a holiday which has been around for a lot longer than many may think. Even the traditions which seem so modern and economically rooted are almost as old as the tradition of Halloween itself. There is a lot of confusion as to when the tradition of Halloween began. Many think that Halloween began with the Celts. The Celts celebrated Samhain which was a holiday that symbolized the end of the time of the light and the beginning of the time of the dark. During the time of the dark it was said that the wall between the spirit world and that of the living was weakened and spirits were able to obtain access to the living more easily. Some believe that trick or treating originates from early Christians in Europe. The traditions took place on November 2nd or “All Souls Day”. On this day, “early Christians would walk from village to village begging for “soul cakes”, made out of square pieces of bread with currants.”(Wilson, Jerry History and Customs of Halloween) This tradition was to help the souls get out of limbo and into heaven faster as it was believed prayers from even strangers could help the souls do this faster.

Though there are many arguments as to how Halloween first started out or as to where the tradition of trick or treating originated; one thing is for sure, that is that as Americans trick or treating is a tradition that most every young child has participated in. Bernie Mealia’s response to what was the purpose of Halloween was, “To get candy and dress up and, it was fun dressing up with funky ass costumes.” Reminiscing about childhood memories when asked if she thought trick or treating had bonded her with family or friends she answered, “Yeah, because we all hang out.”(Mealia, Bernie personal interview) Bernie’s comments show just what Halloween is, it is a holiday that no matter where its roots come from, it has bound many people together. To think of it another way, Halloween makes people go around in groups Halloween isn’t a time to be alone,
