Pollution Causes Drought in Texas Essay

Drought in Texas is of great concern, today, and this essay will focus on pollution as the cause of Texas drought. Coal fired electric generating plants and vehicle emissions are the major sources of the polluting agent, hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons are affecting the weather patterns in our state which result in extended periods of drought. When hydrocarbons are burned, it causes all sorts of problems. If it is pure hydrocarbon and is burned completely, it releases CO2 which is a green house gas. Texas leads the nation in CO2 emissions which has resulted in weather change from adequate rain to drought conditions. Texas emits about 11 percent of U.S. greenhouse-gas, more than any other state, according to Kim Chapman in …show more content…
Accessing the coal in east Texas allows deforestation which increases carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Lignite coal found in east Texas is the source of fuel use to operate the power plants east of interstate 35. This type of coal is not as clean burning as the bituminous coal found in the northern tier of the country. The removal of that forest in the eastern part of Texas, in the process of mining the lignite coal found there, has allowed the atmosphere to retain more carbon dioxide which depletes the oxygen levels of the atmosphere. Texas has the most combustion engines of any state in the union. Automobiles, with their gas engines, and road and non-road vehicles, with their diesel engines, are all examples of these polluting combustions sources. According to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, emissions from cars dwarfs that from power plants. SUV's put out 43% more global-warming pollutants (28 pounds of carbon dioxide per gallon of gas consumed) and 47% more air pollution than the average car. CO2 emissions from cars is 20.4 lbs. per gallon. The automobile emission standards are very relaxed with requirements found only in the two major metropolitan areas, Dallas and Houston. Evidence of the attitude Texas has toward automobile emission is shown by the state filing suit against the EPA aiming to overturn its effort to stop the emissions from being regulated reported by Daniel Patrasu.
