Managing conflict and stress effectively is an essential skill for a supervisor (Rue & Byars, 2010). Improperly handled events or situations that have been ignored will negatively impact the work area in the form of reduced productivity, loss of morale, and could potentially lead to workplace violence (Rue & Byars, 2010).
The supervisor needs basic knowledge of the signs and symptoms of conflict and stress (Rue & Byars, 2010). Recognizing warning signs allows the supervisor to proactively take steps to reduce conflict (Babatunde, 2013). According to Rue and Byars (2010), interpersonal conflict is, “external to the individual” (p 273). The supervisor must listen to the team members identify the root cause of the contention (Rue & Byars, 2010). The situation will dictate whether this is done as a group, on an individual basis or both. This method comes under the confrontation strategy of managing conflict (Rue & Byars, 2010).
Confrontation needs to occur openly and kept on task to the issue (Rue & Byars, 2010). Both parties need to understand the benefits, areas of agreement and be held accountable for agreed on expectations moving forward (Rue & Byars, 2010). Not all conflicts will have an agreeable resolution, sometimes getting the conflict out in the open resolves the matter even if there is not specific actions that will be taken.
The action plan includes setting clear expectations, holding the employees accountable for their behavior, monitoring the situation, and periodically checking in with the team members. The supervisor is responsible for initiating open lines of communication and creating the expectation of trust within the team.
Other intrapersonal events such as the scenario with Julie need to be handled with care. The supervisor needs to focus on the impact her actions are having within the work area and listen to the employee (Rue & Byars, 2010).
