When we think of the successes in the automotive industry Henry Ford comes to mind. Almost every automotive industry book highlights the positive impact Henry Ford had on automotive manufacturing and all label him as a visionary and ethical leader. Anyone striving to become a more influential leader need not look any further than Henry Ford for inspiration. His story highlights his strong self-beliefs, hardworking mentality and a visionary approach of what the automotive industry could be and he believed that vision was achieved through ethical leadership decision-making. “Production time for a single car dropped form over twelve hours to just 93 minutes. The following year, Ford’s production rate of 308,162 eclipsed the number of cars produced by all other automobile manufacturers combined” (PBS, 2008). He created 8-hour work shifts and kept his factories open 24 hours a day, creating stability and boosting morale and thus increasing production. While many people saw Henry Ford as a dreamer, and questioned his views, they could not argue that his ideas were groundbreaking and he was a true visionary leader. Henry Ford not only saw being visionary as a key aspect to leadership, he saw the need to be ethical as equally important.
Ethical Leader
While Henry Ford’s vision for his company’s future was radical he always strived to be an ethical leader in ever decision he made. Ford’s understanding of the “ethical traps” of loyalty syndrome, and worry over image guided his decision- making (“Ethical Leadership,” 2012b, p. 5). Ford struggled with finding a balance between his loyalty to stakeholders and the inherent need to remain loyal to the value of the employees. While profits increased due to his assembly line production and 24-hour operations, his worker’s pay did not increase at a comparable rate.
