Divergent is set in a futuristic Chicago were everyone is separated into 5 sections of Chicago. Throughout the story the characters take trips to the Ferris Wheel of Navy Prier, the Hancock building, the Willis (formally Sears) Tower, and Millennium Park.
Set in a futuristic dystopia Chicago there is a society that is divided into five factions: Abnegation; selflessness, Amity; peaceful, Candor; honest, Dauntless; brave, and Erudite; knowledgeable. Each represents a different virtue of living one’s life. The children of this society have to decide whether they want to stay in their faction or switch to another, the choice is theirs. Tris can’t overpower Tobias for he is far stronger than her. She refuses to kill him and decides to let him kill her. Tobias is then able to overcome the serum and he is able to shut down the attack. They remaining Dauntless are then freed. Tris must now except her gift and use if she wants to end things one and for all and find safety and happiness in her unraveling society.

Beatrice “Tris” Prior is a sixteen years old girl who never questions anything or talks back to no one. During the annual Choosing Ceremony Tris chooses Dauntless because she believes she needs to re-invent herself. Tris meets her new fellow Dauntless initiates Christina, Peter, Will, and Al; they become friends quickly. Tris then meets Tobias "Four" Eaton who is one of the instructors, and grows a love interest in him. Tris decides to rename herself "Tris" and later she gains the nickname “Six” for only having six fears. Tris goes from a shy nobody to someone who stands up for herself and her friends.
Tobias “Four” Eaton is an eighteen year old boy who pushes himself to the limit to prove to everyone he is stronger than he looks. Tobias grew up terrified of his father for his father beat him for everything he did wrong or seemed to be wrong. Scared to be with his father, Tobias joined Dauntless to prove to himself he wasn’t afraid of his father even when Fear Tests said other whys.
