In the novel Divergent, the protagonist Tris, goes through complex tasks that require her to choose between her family and her freedom. She is brave in the sense that she is Dauntless. For she ponders, “Then, with a gasp I can’t contain, I shift my hand forward, and my blood sizzles on the coals. I am selfish. I am brave.” (p. 47) This quote shows that Tris is brave because she left her family, she is going to a new place alone, and she doesn’t know what’s coming next. Tris faces many challenges like having to keep secrets from her friends. “‘I’m Christina,’ she says, offering her hand. I haven’t shaken a hand in a long time either.” (p. 51) Christina is the first person Tris meets after choosing Dauntless, and she would soon become one of
