The Chain Letter
Often created by people who do not have something better to do with their lives, chain letters usually threaten to do horrible things to those who receive it if they do not forward them to an amount of people within a precise amount of time of receiving them. If people follow the instructions within the given chain letter, then numerous of wonderful things will happen to them; however, if they don’t they will be the only one facing the consequences. In addition, in order to convince their recipients, chain letter commonly incorporate phrases like “This is so scary” or something along those lines. First of all, this chain letter appeared in 1888 asking people for financial assistance. People who received those letters forwarded back to their friends and relatives. The letter was convincing by giving details on how these women were struggling without any help. While most recipients were really happy to help them, some of them were just tired of receiving those letters and wrote back to complain because they received the letters too many times.
An example is that a woman wrote saying that “To tell the truth, I am exasperated with this plan. I am a very busy woman, and this is the third benevolence I have been asked to help in this way.” (Rossen, 2016). Another wrote saying that “I have figured up, and you must have an abundance of money for the house. So I won’t send any.” (Rossen, 2016). Finally, while many people were annoyed about the letters asking for money, others thought it was worth and continued to spread it around by either adding or deleting some words, giving the story a variety of
