It’s an early morning on June 23rd, 2017, a Saturday. I wake up startled, thinking I slept in too late, it's 8:00 AM I take a deep breath in a way to relax, I had an hour. Therefore I begin rushing around to log onto my computer and getting all my tabs ready and have my auto check out ready and filled out so I don't have to hassle with filling out basic information. As well as called my bank the previous night to make sure they would accept any payments on my card. They act like I’m crazy, and agree to accept any charges. Nevertheless the first shoe I bought with my own money, Air Jordan 14 Retro. This is the first shoe of over 20 pairs I have collected over the past 3 years and what started my life as a sneakerhead. Sneakers, an industry that's raked in $34 billion in the past year. What makes someone a sneakerhead? A sneakerhead is a person who collects, trades, or admires sneakers as a hobby. Sneakers have become popular became back in the 1900s with the first one being the Converse’s which blew up in 1921. Furthermore, shoes really picked up in popularity in the 70’s with the influence of famous, influential people, such as Michael Jordan. When his first shoe dropped “Air Jordans” everyone wanted them. Jordan was at the peak of his career and everyone wanted to be like Jordan, the greatest basketball player ever. As a result, Nike has grown into a billion-dollar industry, the main source of income being their shoes. They still make Air Jordans, originals ones, retro ones, and they all sell out instantly. It's important to realize that some of these sneakerheads have no intention of wearing these expensive shoes, instead just wanna hold on to them and keep them as a souvenir or find it as their hobby. These sneakerheads tend to have 10,20,30 or over 50 pairs of all different sneakers! Sneakers that can range from as little as $10 dollars to $500, some being obscure and people not knowing about the brand at all and some brands that millions of people know about. What makes people want to collect shoes? There isn't just one answer. People have their own reasoning to collect sneakers, some like it because they feel they can express themselves in their own way or on the other hand, just have a love for sneakers. Because of growth in sneaker popularity, many more shoes have come out in the past 10 years. Others may say “buy one for show, one for keeps.” In fact, a lot of sneakerheads become what they are because of the style of sneakers. They don't enjoy keeping sneakers in the closet to collect dust. They like to wear a different type of shoe every day of the week to have style and keep their fashion new and not
