“He looked in astonishment no longer at himself but at an awesome stranger” a quote from William Golding in Lord of The Flies. This quote illustrates how Jack transformed himself to a devil looking mad men and how his defects are becoming more apparent as the story develops. The leader of a boys’ choir, Jack, is the best example of Golding’s theme “a defective human nature can only create a defective society” because he had a cruel desire for mastery, he was wicked and sadistic, and he doesn’t show interest in the rules of order established on the island.
Since the very beginning Jack had a cruel desire for mastery. This desire he was so eager about comes from the fact that he wanted to rule the island his way and have all the power to be able to make decisions without anyone consent. “I ought to be chief,” said Jack with simple arrogance, “because I’m chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp.” (22). Jack believes he should be the leader and have the power because he has always had it. He finds comfort and pleasure from making others suffer and has his own cruel way to persuade people to do what he wants. “He’s not a hunter. He’d never got us meat. He isn’t a perfect and we don’t know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing. All this talk” (126). Jack finds a way to make Ralph look like a bad chief and uses it against him. He tries to make the others look at Ralph as a bad leader and him as a good candidate. Although he might be good at hunting and doing certain things others can’t do he takes the power that he has and turns it against
