The first way that Jack attempts to seize power is through justifying himself. At the beginning of the story a character named Ralph blows a conch that that draws all the boys on the island to the same spot. In chapter four Jack takes his hunters to go kill a pig and unintentionally lets the signal fire burn out. Ralph and the others hurry up to the top of the mountain to check the fire and find that it has gone. The boys restart the fire and Jack returns with his hunter and a dead pig. After Ralph confronts Jack about leaving the fire they begin to cook and eat the pig. “Piggy spoke, also dribbling. Aren’t I having none? (73).” This shows that Jack had not given Piggy meat on purpose to show that he was superior to him. This is also shown when Simon gives his meat to Piggy and Jack says “Eat! Damn you! (74).” In Jack’s mind he gave Simon food so Simon should be thankful and eat it. The fact that Jack withholds meat from Piggy and tries to force Simon to eat shows that Jack is trying to gain
