When at your house, and your home network runs out of ethernet ports, or the Wi-Fi is spotty and slow, it is time for an upgrade. When upgrading your home network there a few things you can do. For example, you can buy a new router, with or without Wi-Fi; replace your modem, and you can expand your ethernet options by buying a switch. The process of expanding your home network is rather simple, all you need is some time, a little computer knowledge, and some handy working skills. The first thing you will want to do is determine how you want to expand your home network. If all you want is better Wi-Fi, all you may need is a better router. In older houses, Wi-Fi can be blocked by old metal inside the walls, so I recommend either getting a high-power Wi-Fi router or running ethernet lines to all your computers. When running ethernet lines throughout your house, it is important to keep in mind the number of LAN ports on your router. Most routers today usually only have three to five LAN ports. You can check how many ports your router is by looking at the back of it, there should be one WAN port, and the rest of the ethernet ports are what you plug devices into. If you are going to need more than your router has, you are going to need a switch. There are two main types of switches, managed and unmanaged.
