Why we need the Confederate flag. The Confederate Flag, most often, wrongfully assumed and used as a symbol for slavery in the south. This truly is a mistake on the general population for believing in such nonsense. People should be told the truth about the Confederate flag. There are few things that are true about this flag but there are things about this flag that others ignore. There are its origins, its true meaning, and why it should be kept known as a part of our history. The Confederate flag was designed by a man named WM. Porcher Miles back in august of 1861. The original design was sent to General G. T. Beauregard to be examined. WM. Porcher Miles said, “This is a very rough, the proportions very bad.” So on his own WM. Porcher Miles sent his own design and described it as, “…[M]y favorite. It avoided the religious objection about the cross (from the Jews and many Protestant sect[ions]), because it did not stand out so conspicuously as if the cross had been placed upright thus. [design sketch].”(Miles) Originally this flag was meant to be just a battle flag. “The Confederate Battle Flag… more distinguishable from the U.S. flag in the confusion of combat…[W]as primarily carried by Confederates at [the battle of] Antietam.” (Colors) As previously stated, this flag has been wrongly used by the Klu Klux Klan, Neo Nazis, and other various groups as a symbol of hate towards minority groups here in the United States.
