Helmholtz started out his research and education by going to the Friedrich Wilhelm Institute in Berlin to study medicine in 1838. He received free medical education with the condition that he would serve as an army doctor for eight years. He was relieved of his army duties in 1843 because he had impressive scientific skills that should be used in other ways to benefit the public. After he was relieved from the army as a doctor, Helmholtz became interested in the the field of optics. Later in 1843, he wrote a doctoral thesis about the connections between nerve fibers and nerve optics. In the next couple years, Hermann von Helmholtz became a professor at the University of Bonn in 1855 teaching anatomy and physiology.
