In life there is suffering. There has always been suffering and there will always be suffering; it is part of what makes us human. This is something that has been known for much longer than any of us have even been a part of the human experience. It is something that both Dante Alighieri and William Shakespeare took note of hundreds of years ago and something that both of them thought was a topic important enough to explore through their respective writings Dante’s Inferno and King Lear. With these works being written hundreds of years apart, there are of course some different approaches to the idea.…
In Doriani chapter eleven he stresses that reflection is the key to applying the main point of the biblical text. He then explains the goal of reflecting is to discover and teach the main lesson of biblical text. Doriani goes on to explain steps which are to identify, topic, point, message, application, and Christ. Doriani explains that some texts are easy to answer the steps, but others are going to have more attention to find the answers to these steps. Doriani then breaks these steps down and explains them.…
His life, viewed by so many as a blessing, as an example of perfect faith and elation. He was one who was well respected and when he spoke, everyone stopped to listen. With the very sound of his avid voice when he stood on the pulpit, all felt restored from whatever pain they were enduring. But what no one knew about this man was of the guilt, the sin, the physical pain and of the many tribulations that Arthur Dimmesdale kept to himself. Suffering is part of life.…
Section 1: Understanding of the Jewish Theology of Suffering During the Holocaust extremely destructive and tragic events shook the history of Judaism across the world and, in particular, Germany. Anti-Semitism had heavily influenced the Nazi siege focused on eliminating/ exterminating the Jewish race. Human dignity was mocked during the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party occupying Poland as the Jews were put through forced labour, to result in the demolition of such human group. A large number of Jews had lost faith and hope during the horrific time spent in death camps, while others grew closer to God in their suffering.…
The extent in which humans are capable of suffering may not be within the limits of the right of God. The benefits in the end may be questionable and the control in which God has over the suffering he has allowed may also…
In Constitution 2, paragraph 12 relates to the Galilean Principle because men and women of Holy Cross are called here to have a "servant's heart" and be willing to go into the margins of society and empathize with them through their suffering, but also to bring hope "of the coming kingdom" by being a witness of Christ's love and openness in hospitality (Elizondo 273, 277). "Wherever" indicates that those associated with Holy Cross are called to represent the "crossroads" of humanity and follow in the footsteps of Christ who came from the margins to destroy the social borders and demonstrates what it means to be a universal church (Elizondo 273 & 274). The statement, "whose lot we share," represents the calling of the men and women of Holy Cross…
The definition of martyrdom through the readings and lectures of the class have all fallen under the idea of giving one’s life for something greater than themselves. This something greater can range from a cause one feels strongly about, to God. In every instance, the person gets strength from and outside source, usually being the Lord. A prime example of martyrdom was in the book, Martyrdom and Noble Death, within the story of the Maccabees. The story of the Woman with seven sons showed how martyrs are willing to give up their life in the name of their beliefs, regardless of the earthly pain they may receive.…
Final Thoughts and Musings I wanted to close this post out with a disclaimer and some encouragement… Disclaimer: Like James Torrance mentioned earlier, despite the covenantal, filial, and loving nature in which God relates to humanity - which, requires nothing on our part for its effectiveness or actuality - it still demands a response from us. For some of you reading this post, you may be thinking to yourself, “Sullivan, if our salvation, God’s relationality, etc. towards us is covanental in nature and requires nothing of us, does that just mean we can do whatever we want without repercussion??” Absolutely not, Grace demands a response, but it’s our perspective of why we respond and how we respond that matters most.…
Likewise, Jesus Christ come to earth to take our place of the cross. Because we were disconnected from God, Jesus Christ sacrificed himself to reconnect us to the father. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost” (1 Timothy 1:15 English Standard Version). In addition, this was all planned by God for Jesus to deliver salvation to the earth. God didn’t kill us for all the sinful acts that we committed but he justified us.…
Undergoing extreme amounts of pain, Jesus was fixed to the cross by securing nails in his hands and feet. Even through all this pain, he still chose to die for all of those who have sinned. He had a choice; he could have left us to sin and not have…
Throughout the history the answer for this question of human suffering remained a mystery. With Adam and Eve sin and suffering entered into the world, and this evil is experienced by all human being. But now by Jesus Christ, the Son of God, human suffering takes the new dimension of redemptive meaning. Pope John Paul says, “One can say that with the Passion of Christ all human suffering has found itself in a new situation.”…
This is considered to be the greatest act of redemption in the New Testament when God gave His one and only perfect son to die on a cross so that we might one day live with God for eternity. Jesus spent His life on earth revealing Himself as the Savior of the world to both the Jews and the Gentiles. Jesus performed many miracles; healing the sick and diseased, raising the dead to life, casting out of demons, and controlling nature. By coming from the line of David, Jesus showed that He had control to be the king God had chosen to lead Israel. Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are able to be reconnected with God in heaven while on earth.…
Pain is a blessing. Philip Yancey, author of Where is God When it Hurts? (Zondervan, 1990), proposes many thoughtful illustrations of suffering in our lives. He describes pain in a curious fashion, but offers multiple points and recognizes various situations that commonly occur in our lives. Philip Yancey introduces life-changing ideas that involve the purpose of pain, where it comes from, and God’s role in suffering,…
DANTE Human suffering is always a hard subject to describe or experience in life or death. While reading Dante Alighieri poem called “Inferno” it describes the cycles of life and death. The fascinating part of the story is the detail description of hell, and the suffering the souls experience for eternity (Davis, Harrison, Johnson, Smith and Crawford, 2004). The question to answer is “Comment on the view of human suffering.…
This trust for God and His Word is the key to enduring all suffering that a person may encounter (4). The trials that we encounter throughout our lives can force us to reconsider and revaluate our relationship with God (4). The book of Job demonstrates clearly the potential of suffering to bring a believer closer to their God, although it can also drive many people away (2). This is why we need to properly address the topic of suffering throughout our lives and encourage people to discuss the topic; if people do not clearly understand the role of God in suffering then they may likely share the common view that God has forsaken them and they cannot understand why. With this education on suffering it is important to continue to seek God’s counsel often and talk with him and His followers about our views on suffering and whether we are struggling with suffering of our own (6).…
