Personal Narrative Essay: Who I Who Am I?

Improved Essays
Who am I? This is a question that I have seemingly stumbled upon quite often recently. Many different people in my life have helped to shape me in to the man I have become today; with each person that I encounter in my life adding a little piece to the puzzle I call my life. People are not the only influence in my life, there are also events and activities that create a drive in me to strive to achieve excellence in any task I attempt to perform. If I strive for excellence and try to be the best I can be one day I will be successful at whatever career I choose to do. I will have lived a great life and accomplished many great things but everything must come to an end. I would describe myself as a young man of the age of 18 who has lived a humble life up until this point. I grew up in the small town of Conner Montana. Growing up and moving down to Las Vegas has allowed me to realize that I have matured a lot faster than the average college freshman. Although it may not always look like that, I do understand there is a time to be funny and joke around. I have also learned that there is a time and place where as an adult I need to uphold the maturity and respect that I have learned to carry with me over the last 18 years. I believe part of the reason a lot of the people my same age are lacking maturity is due to the way that they were raised. I was raised in a very strict house hold and spent a lot of time around my grandparents and parents which allowed me to mature by using the same values that they learned growing up. The reason my parents we strict on me and my sister was because they knew what was right for us and didn’t want us to make a decision that would affect the future of our lives. Maturity is a concept that may be hard to define but can be perceived in multiple ways. Being mature does not necessarily have an age, and it does not just happen overnight. Achieving a level of maturity depends on a person’s sense of responsibility, humility and wisdom. Being a mature person also includes having a sense of self and knowing who you are. Although some may see maturity as being serious rather than silly or an individual having the ability to act responsibly, the key to maturity is putting others before oneself and knowing the difference between what is right and wrong.…

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

That’s not to say this average age range of eighteen through twenty-nine promises the most experience, but in terms of absorbing real-world information, emerging adulthood is the front running time period for exposure to unfamiliar experiences, decisions, and responsibilities. In other terms, it is less about being experienced, and more about becoming experienced, or getting acclimated. As aforementioned, not all backgrounds of people get the time to sit and map out the route in which they hope to guide their lives. And because of that, the deliberate decision-making is all the more crucial. Point being, with privileges come responsibilities.…

Most people, at one point or another, hit a point when they need to become mature. Some people sooner, others later. Maturity though, is not something based on the amount of birthday candles you’ve blown out as maturity is a mental state and is simply determined by circumstances. Maturity is something that is a mental state, not a birthday present. Maturity is instead something where you begin doing the correct and responsible decisions in the right situations.…
