Definition Essay On Maturity

Most people, at one point or another, hit a point when they need to become mature. Some people sooner, others later. Maturity though, is not something based on the amount of birthday candles you’ve blown out as maturity is a mental state and is simply determined by circumstances. Maturity is something that is a mental state, not a birthday present. Maturity is instead something where you begin doing the correct and responsible decisions in the right situations. It’s a point when the brain begins to change and become more selfless and responsible. But when people don’t change and stick with a mental state like “spastic and crazy” they don't end up becoming mature and well-natured. Furthermore, maturity is something that develops in the brain

There are many different opinions on the age of responsibility and adulthood. In Alan Greenblatts article, “What is the Age of Responsibility?”, he discusses how people often think 18 is too young to be considered an adult but yet there are many contradictions against the claim. With so many factos influencing what people think maturaity means, people should be considered adults at 18 because that is when teens start experiencing adult things and start making real life decisons. The age of maturity should be measured not by age but by the persons life experiences. Robert Epstein, a psychologist, completed a study with, “... More than 30,000 people showing that 30% of American teens are more competent than the median adults in a variety of ways”.…

Maturity is a concept that may be hard to define but can be perceived in multiple ways. Being mature does not necessarily have an age, and it does not just happen overnight. Achieving a level of maturity depends on a person’s sense of responsibility, humility and wisdom. Being a mature person also includes having a sense of self and knowing who you are. Although some may see maturity as being serious rather than silly or an individual having the ability to act responsibly, the key to maturity is putting others before oneself and knowing the difference between what is right and wrong.…

On the 25th of June 2012 the supreme court made a decision that juveniles cannot be charged a life sentence due to a violation of the eighth amendment of cruel or unusual punishment however four supreme court members chose that children should be charged with life in prison. I believe that the ruling on this subject was right that juveniles should not be charged as adults and here's why. Age plays a predominant role in determining whether or not to give someone life in prison. Turning 18 in and of itself has no true significance.…

In the article written by Julie Beck entitled “When Are You Really an Adult?” she uses a series of true life accounts to attempt to define when a person becomes an adult and what defines adulthood. She begins with the real life example of Henry David Thoreau and catches the attention of the reader by leading them down the path that she is talking about a current day young man. However, when she reveals she is talking of a young man of years past it is obvious that many different generations struggle with the definition and thought of being an adult. Beck makes it clear that what defines being an adult is not clear, there is no black and white answer. There are many factors leading to whether a person feels they have become an adult.…

In The Old Man and the Sea, it became clear that the concept of “coming of age” does not really have anything to do with age. For me, coming of age is about you believing that you have reached a certain level of maturity.
