Is Your Child Tongue Tied? Know What Can Be Done About It

Being tongue tied, or also known as having an anchored tongue, can affect child development in several ways. Treating the problem is very important, because it can eventually lead to pain and other complications. If you’ve been told that your child is tongue tied, here is what you need to know.

What Does It Mean to Be Tongue Tied?

A tongue will connect at the base of the mouth using a small amount of skin. This skin is what helps the tongue move around. If your child’s tongue has a piece of skin that is very restrictive and tight, it is known as being tongue tied. Ideally, it should be a loose so that the tongue can move freely.

A child with a tied tongue could have problems breastfeeding as a baby if the condition is severe, but sometimes the problem is not noticed until they are older. It can often cause problems with speaking as a child does not learn the proper way to make sounds. Older children may also develop problems eating some solid foods, or lose self confidence because of the problem.

Tied tongue need to undergo a corrective surgery called a frenectomy. While there are several ways to have the procedure performed, the basic method involves snipping the skin that is restraining the tongue. Your dentist can actually perform this procedure for you in their office.

Another way to fix the problem is with laser surgery. The main benefit is that the procedure is safe and painless, and will not cause any bleeding afterwards. This procedure may be used for older patients that are worried about the
