When considering the benefit of pursing higher education, many people only weigh the financial success compared to what is sacrificed in order to qualify the value of higher education. Louis Menand supports this statement in his article “Live and Learn Why we have college” by theorizing:
“In a society that encourages its members to pursue the career paths that promise the greatest personal or financial rewards, people will, given a choice, learn only what they
need to know for success. They will have no incentive to acquire the knowledge and skills important for life as an informed citizen, or as a reflective and culturally literate human being. Life in college has much more potential than providing the opportunity to learn a set of skills only in the narrow field of their major. While obtaining knowledge for their career inside of a textbook, students also absorb imperative life experiences that allow them to prosper throughout life outside of the classroom. “College is about exposing students to many things and creating an aphrodisiac atmosphere so that they might fall in lifelong love with a few.” (Brooks). College is an opportunity; an opportunity to discover passion, a love for knowledge, establish meaningful relationships, and beyond. A college campus has its own culture, a culture that most people only can experience through attendance of a higher education institution. This college world eases young individuals into the responsibilities of adulthood, and by graduation day a student transforms from an inexperienced high schooler into a wholly developed person.
