Fear – How do we analyse fear. How do put into words something that comes from deep within our souls. It grips us in its vice and makes us a victim of all the HOGWASH that the world can spin. Fear has the ability to destroy our lives without us even realising that it has come into how lives.…
Through this connection we have built a irreplaceable relationship with the land and our communities that is now being destroyed in the modern age. Right off the bat, Coplen strategically begins her persuasive, argumentative essay with a personal anecdote. Here she describes a heartwarming family moment: making tamales with her mother, grandmother, cousins, and aunts. This memory is filled with warm, joyful imagery in order to evoke emotions…
Chapter 6, “When Farmers Shut Off the Machinery”, by Brian A. Devore, is about farmers who have resulted in using what they see on their own farm and to observe changes to decide what is best rather than jumping to conclusions and possibly trying to use the newest silver-bullet fix. Many different things approaches were used in the chapter. David Podoll keeps track of the weeds near his farm. Unlike most farmers who would see these weeds and spray them, Podoll keeps them as the weeds are a home for the larvae of the Painted Lady butterfly. The butterfly larvae will feed on the weeds and naturally keep the weed population in check.…
The scarecrow begins to see himself in a world filled with deception and being constantly observed by corporate watch birds. Through substantial rationality, he is able to reflect on his place in society and use his agency to change the output of food. Postmodernism represents an era in which all knowledge has been reduced to particularized narratives that make it difficult to make definitive truth claims about any of them (Lyotard, 1979). Chipotle (2013), attempts to demonize all producers, large and small, that relate to businesses that work to feed the population. They do this in order to selfishly enhance their image and transform individual’s knowledge.…
In the article “A Decade of Fear” Sam Robert explains how McCarthyism turned Americans against each other in the decade after World War II by creating fear on every single one of them, because they were either involved with Communism or knew someone who was. According to Robert “screenwriters, actors, directors, and producers were dragged before the House Un-American Activities Committee and asked to “name names” of colleagues who had Communist ties or sympathies” (par. 13). In other words, men and women were asked to expose friends and/or family who was associated with the practice of Communism. As a matter of fact, society did not really have a choice at that time, because the government was callous and did not care about their rebuttals.…
And in 1845 wind-born spore destroyed the entire Irish’s main crop, which resulted in about a million deaths known as the Irish Potato Famine. But it is Pollan’s examination of modern potato cultivation methods (against the background of the potato’s natural history) that forces us to see the illusion of control we have by the extreme dangers of remaining in a monoculture framework for potato cultivation and the inherent dangers when we remain locked into this unnatural framework. Pollan’s description of modern cultivation through testimonies from farmers and corporations exposes the inherent difficulties we face if we continue monoculture farming. Modern monoculture for potato farming leaves little room for working with nature since the options seem to be either more pests or GMOs. Farming with heavy pesticide use…
The article, “I Want Your Fear” by Ryan Henderson goes in depth on the incorrect assumption that vaccines lead to autism. Henderson describes how the anti-vaccine movement started. The author claims that Andrew Wakefield caused the anti-vaccine movement, which began with a paper stating that the MMR vaccine caused autism and Crohn’s Disease. However, Wakefield’s claims hold no scientific weight and caused a mass hysteria. Wakefield does not have the credentials to make such claims as he is a medical doctor and not a vaccine scientist.…

In many cases, with history and in fictional novels, societies have been destroyed by confusion and fear. The novel, Lord of the Flies, is full of context of fear taking over people’s ability to make rational choices. This is shown in chapter eight, when Ralph, Jack and older boys are afraid of the beastie and panic. Jack tries to take this as an advantage by using the time of fear to become chief. In time of chaos and panic, with the boys stranded on the island, is when others have to step up and take leadership.…
Gothic literature of the nineteenth century echoed the repressed fears held by individuals of the ideas introduced in the Enlightenment like an exhale. Tales of mad scientists dominated literature like a mirror into America’s psyche. In the early twentieth century filmmakers coincidentally, or intentionally caught onto the repressed fears individuals held in regards to the advancement of science and the decline of religion, and created a horror film empire on the topic. Upon the development of sound in horror films, what is remembered as the classic period was born. From 1931 to 1936, there was a trend in horror cinema which featured mad scientists, comprising over half of the horror films of the classic period.…
Mid Reflection This mid-reflection was based on the first six interviews during the data collection. The purpose of the mid-reflection was to compare the researcher’ pre-reflection and understand of the African-American farmer's experience with UF/IFAS Extension with deeper actual knowledge of the data (Wilcke, 2002). From this point, the researcher identified the new understanding of the lived experiences with African-American farmers with UF/IFAS Extension. This enabled the researcher an opportunity to expand and gain fresh perspective of the phenomena.…

Roth wrote that fear has changed in modern times. He noted that premodern thinkers believed that fear should be cultivated to ensure moral behavior. However, modern thinkers discuss fear as an emotion or a reaction, not deliberate and certainly not cultivated by those who experience it. I believe this shift has impacted our class because we grew up in the shadow of the September 11th attacks and in periods of serious economic uncertainty. For us, fear is a childhood companion we have grown up familiar with, unlike hope.…
