T he Hindenburg Disaster occurred 79 years ago today. On May 6,1937 in Lakehurst, New Jersey the world’s largest aircraft ever built caught fire and burned to the ground in seconds. The Hindenburg was a zeppelin aircraft. Zeppelins were made of helium but for some odd reason the Hindenburg was made of hydrogen, a very flammable gas. The Hindenburg was over eight-hundred feet long and carried over 2656 people across the Atlantic between Germany and New York and Rio de Janerio before the accident.
It was a stormy evening and making a correct landing was nearly impossible for Captain Pruss to achieve. It is said that Captain Pruss took a wide left turn to fly a descending oval pattern around the north and west to line up for the landing
