The Flinders Ranges are the largest mountain range in South Australia. located in outback South
Australia about 200 kilometres north from the city of
Adelaide (125 miles). The Flinders ranges stretch for over 430 kilometres. Starting at Port Pirie and ending near lake Callabonna 120 kilometers from
Cameron corner, the junction of South Australia,
Queensland and New South Wales.
How where the ranges formed?
Believe it or not about 8oo million years ago the Ranges where nearly completely under water. In that period great forces of nature and tectonic plates lifted the entire east coast of Australia out of the water. This created a deep inland hollow. One of the main mining areas back then was the Blinman Mine. This mine was used for mining copper. The Blinman mine however was not used after the year 1918 and has been closed down ever since. Like many other spacious areas around the world the ranges are also used for a rather large amount of farming.
Such a large amount of farming has been done on this land that early farming techniques in South Australia exhausted the land and so pressure grew on the government to produce more land that could be used for farming. The main things that people farm in the Flinders ranges consists of sheep, milk cattle, meat cattle, orchard trees, grain and wheat, pigs and some vegetables.

The Local Aboriginals are called the Adnyamathanha people. That means hills or rock people. These people have been living in the ranges for thousands of years. This means they have a great understanding of the land. There stories of how the ancient land was created are fascinating. The last full blooded member of this tribe died in 1973. The story is a about an old kingfisher man named Yurlu. The story tells the reader about how this man attended an initiation ceremony.
At the same time two Akurra (powerful dreamtime serpents) left to travel south to Ikara (Wilpena Pound). later the fisherman looked up into the sky to see stars rising. He thought this was the start of the ceremony. But it was the eyes of the Akurra looking down on them. When the kingfisherman eventually reached the proper
