When I first read this quote I thought that maybe Nick was just talking about some random men that he had met during his time in Long Island, but now I realize one of these “wild” men must have been Gatsby. Nick talked about how he tried to keep his distance from Gatsby and men like him, but in the end he ends up becoming one of Gatsby's closest friends and one of the only people there for him in the end.

When I first saw this quote I just thought that it was the light at the end of Daisy and Tom’s dock, but Gatsby actually associates this light with Daisy. This green light is a recurring theme throughout the novel and it serves as a reminder for Gatsby that he is so close, yet so far from Daisy.

Rereading the quote I now am able to pull out the fact that this is referencing how Gatsby remains this mysterious figure throughout the whole book, who hides many secrets.
