All artists should have the right to express themselves without having to worry about being restricted or censured. Around the world, artists are using many art forms to express how they think or feel. A good example of this will be controversial music. This type of music is becoming more and more common due to its high popularity, many performers from all genres are finding ways to express their discontent or approval towards many important issues in today’s world. They are creating music that is seizing people’s attention in both positive and negative ways. Most of the time this controversial music is created to draw attention to issues of violence, sexuality, religion, or obscene language.

There is never justification for a piece of art being restricted or banned from public consumption, regardless of religious, violence, or sexual content. For instance, in the late 30’s Billie Holiday was forced to change recording labels since her original label company refused to record her song “Strange Fruit”. Being told not to record her song didn’t stop her from presuming her dream and she found a recording label that believes in her project. It is well known that the man who wrote the song was inspired by a photograph of a lynching. The song was a protest, against the inhumanities of racism. The song caused great controversy since it had social and political context. As a result, radio stations in the United States refused to play it. However, this didn’t stop the song from becoming the number one song. Also in 1967, the Beatles high popularity didn’t the British government from banning two of their songs “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “A Day in the Life”. They were banned from the British radio, as they were believed to encourage drug use. It’s clear that if that remained grounds for banning a song today, many rap artists like Snoop Dogg will not have a career today. Since the main subject, most rap artist used in their lyrics have to do with drugs, sex, and violence. As time has passed many things have changed, songs that were censure and banned in the 30’s and 60’s are well received and acceptable in present days.
