In the beginning of the novel Lord of the Flies, the island society attempts to enforce the rules strictly, but as time passes, rules become more difficult to sustain. In the beginning of the novel, Jack talks about wanting to inflict strict rules. All the children had just recently gotten onto the island, and felt they needed a way to govern themselves to stay alive. Jack takes a leadership role to all the other children because he is the leader of the choir. He says to the group “we’ll have rules...Lots of rules! Then when anyone breaks ‘em--“ (Golding, 33). The quote shows that in the beginning of the story, the group wants to have rules to keep order in their society. Jack believes that everyone must be kept in line for everyone to stay
