Ralph is the better leader In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph is the oldest and most responsible of the boys on an island after a plane crash. His opposite is Jack who is a selfish instigator that comes off as carefree compared to Ralph who is chief.
Two very different personalities arose to become leaders. At first Ralph doesn't seem like the nicest person either but he really is charismatic, when Piggy is first called Fatty Ralph recognized that Piggy’s feelings were hurt. Ralph was elected leader, and immediately starts to organize the boys and give orders that were actually helping achieve the goal of being rescued and always thinks things through before making a statement or giving an order. “Listen, everybody. I’ve got to have time to think things out. I can’t decide what to do straight off. If this isn’t an island we might be rescued straight away. Everybody must stay around here and wait and not go away. Three of us will go on an expedition and find out.” (23) Ralph represents democracy. He rules with fairness and is not afraid to compromise. The boys on the island follow him through choice and not by force. Ralph plans for the future from the beginning and tries to replace the adults, which are not present on the island. Whereas Jack represents a dictatorship. Jack was the given the power to lead the choir by Ralph, only to get him to stop complaining. Again showing how Ralph sees a problem and deals with it accordingly.
Jack rules by fear and violence. The boys on the island follow him because they are scared of the consequences if they do not. Jack's plans are superficial, he does not plan for a way to be rescued like Ralph does, and instead he organizes hunts and fun. Jack only wants to focus on one thing and that’s hunting. All he wants to do is to kill a pig. On page 51, lines 4-31,
