Was United Nations justified in dropping atomic bombs on Japan?
World War II also known as The Second World War was a global war that was fought from 1939 to 1945 in Europe and Asia. The Second World War was debatably the most consequential period of the 20th century. World War II led to vital advancements in technology and set the base for post war social changes, that includes the end of colonialism by the Europeans, the civil rights movement in the United States., and the American Women’s Rights Movement in 1950s, in addition to the initiatives for research and exploration of outer space. Japan’s invasion in Manchuria (1931) and China (1937) displeased the Americans. When Japan pronounced its invasion in French Indochina (1940) the Americans were extremely furious. President Franklin D. Roosevelt commanded a trade moratorium on American exports of steel and oil to Japan, two important resources the Japanese army was dependent on. America was economically and militarily powerful however, it was never fearful of any attack on the States’ land. When Japan’s imports of oil and steel were debarred it saw Britain and Dutch colonies of Southeast Asia as a solution to attain needed raw material for the Japanese Navy to carry out its operations. Japan’s confidence to conquer these colonies was majorly because the Europeans were fighting against the Germans and Italians. The only force that could combat the Japanese was the American Pacific fleet. Japan’s military and economy both were in a fragile state and attacking Pearl Harbour would mean to risk it all on one turn of pitch and toss.
