Register to read the introduction… Walton, founder of Wal-Mart, was opposed to unions from the beginning (Berfield, 2012). Therefore, being a private employer was a part of the strategic plan for his business. A strategic plan is set forth in the beginning stages of setting up a business and outlines the vision of its creator that will ultimately provide the company with the structure for long-term success (Bateman, 2011). The Wal-Mart organization believes that providing an open door policy for the employees to talk about their issues or ideas with management and does not see the need to bring in a third party (Frontline, 2004). However, when the employees went on strike in October of last year, Wal-Mart had to come up with a contingency plan in order to deal with it. A contingency plan sometimes needs to be put in place to ensure that a company’s customer service remains superior during times of distress (Bateman, 2011). Therefore, Wal-Mart’s upper management issued a memo to managers and salaried associates outlining how best to deal with employees that are talking about or actually do walkout in order to reduce the effect on its customers and employees whom choose to continue to work (Wilkes, …show more content…
