According to the text, the main problem in visualizing neurons was not due to their minuteness, but it was because of the way they are constructed. Neurons are so tightly packed and intertwined together through one another, that when you try to look at them through a microscope, you cannot see anything clearly. With the discovery of the neuroanatomical techniques, the Golgi stain method and the Nissl stain methods; this has allowed neuroscientists to see the complex network of structures differently. It now made it possible to see the fine details of the neurons and to identify specific features within and outside the cells. When comparing the two neuroanatomical techniques, the Golgi method gives that ability to see the whole, individual neuron but in limited number, while the nissl method allows you to highlight cell bodies of all neurons and to see how many are actually there.
The Golgi stain method is achieved by putting nervous tissue with potassium dichromate and silver nitrate. It was discovered by Camillo Golgi, and the methods discovery was accidental. Previously it was impossible to see the neuron, but with the discovery of the Golgi stain, the new technique allowed for the visualization of whole neurons.

These dyes highlighted important structural features of neurons when placed on the slides because they penetrated and bound only to the structures in neuron cell bodies. There are two uses for the Nissl stain method when looked at through high and low magnification. Under low magnification you can see the brain structure by selectively staining groups of cell bodies whereas under high magnification, when using the Nissl stain, it allowed them to get a good indication of how many neural cell bodies were in an area because they could now count the number of stained dots that they saw on the
