Analyzing Art Work by Different Artists from Different Periods Art is very important to people especially when it represents spirituality. It adds a strong connection between the artist and the viewers on something they both agree on. Art in the early Renaissance was mostly about spirituality, but as time passes by, artists paid less attention to spirituality, and they started adding other themes to art. I intend to show that The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, represents the scene of The Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. Da Vinci has depicted the horror in the 12 disciples’ faces when Jesus announced that one of them would betray him.…
In the background of this painting, there are several other figures standing around to witness the repentance of the son to his father. In comparison from the father and son to the other figures residing in the shadows, the contrast in lighting can be interpreted as the homecoming of repentance and forgiveness aside from sin and sorrow. Altogether, Rembrandt wanted to show the importance of repentance and forgiveness of sins based upon his Protestant faith by illustrating a parable of Jesus and using extreme contrasts of dark and…

Duccio and Giotto paint, arguably, their most influential pieces during the first decade of the twelfth century . Giotto is commissioned by Enrico Scrovegni in Padua to fresco the Arena Chapel to reconcile himself with God over the sins of his father’s usury. In contrast, Duccio is commissioned by the Church fathers of Sienna to paint a panel altarpiece for the Duomo . Giotto utilizes his private patronage to develop new principles of dramatic narrative while Duccio sticks to the Bible stories and develops a variation of Gothic style. Despite differences in technique, location and function of the work, and patronage, these two artists were united in creating a new form of visual language helping to launch the period art historians now call…
In Biography of a Mexican Crucifix, Jennifer Hughes takes us on a journey through Mexican history with the people of Totolapan to help us understand their devotion to their patron saint, the Cristo Aparecido. For the devotees of the Cristo, the crucifix is the cornerstone of their religion, but the missionaries of Mexico used it as an opportunity to create a new, syncretic Christianity for the Indians. In this paper I will look at the conflicting implications between the crucifix as art and religion and argue that the lived religion approach does effectively help us to understand the tension between tradition, contact, and change. “The Augustinian order, in particular, seems to have been committed to creating ever more impressive architectural…

Formal Analysis of Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Seven Deadly Sins and The Four Last Things”. In this early work, Bosch depicts both the sins and the consequences of them as well as God’s ever watching eye. Currently housed in Museo Nacional Del Prado, Madrid The Seven Deadly Sins and The Four Last Things or sometimes referred to as simply “The Table of sins” is considered by many to be an example of Bosch’s early work, however, it is still debated.…

By connecting John and Pontius with these biblical characters through the symbol of fish, Ruhl adds psychological value to her play. This familiar Christian symbol makes her metaphors more clear and presents her audiences with two opposing forces that must find common ground throughout the course of the play. The audience must think more critically about these common biblical figures, deciding for themselves how moral their decisions are within the given circumstances. Similar to the double meaning of fish, water symbolizes both the “living waters” of Christ and the seas of the world that souls can get lost in (Drewer 534). Ruhl associates John with Christ by having him spend his days upon the living waters as he fishes, while Pontius is…
Resurrection is supposed to be universal, so every single person must face their “Last Judgement” with Christ, which is why the painting shows so much movement and activity between the people. This painting depicts all of mankind’s redemption period, and has universal appeal among the people and the world fills with hope to be redeemed by Christ. Throughout the painting, spectators can see that the people within the painting are holding on to one another either for comfort and support or out of anger trying to push the others away in order to get redemption from Christ. When looking at Christ in the painting, one can see that his two hands are facing two different directions, his right hand is facing up, as in a way pushing the people towards the top to Heaven, and his left hand is facing down pushing the people…

John 14: John 14 begins a four chapter section (14-17), commonly known as the “Farewell Discourse”. It is primarily composed of Jesus' utilizing his final moments with his disciples to teach them and assure that his ministry will not fail upon his impending crucifixion. John’s theology here becomes dense, as a lot of what Jesus addresses here would have been relevant to the Johannine community in particular. The Farewell Discourse follows a basic pattern, as it was a recognizable genre at this point in history.…
