Marshes and swamps found in the Mid-Atlantic are considered coastal wetlands (citation). This is because the watersheds here will drain into the Atlantic Ocean. While the water is traveling to its destination it provides many services along the way. Wetlands help provide coastline security and water quality protection to the surrounding areas. Roots, trees, and all vegetation in coastal accomplish this task by storing and releasing current water. The reason it is important to Virginia is because it provides tourism and money same as the beaches do. The main difference being is that the Dismal Swamp offers more attractions than just shopping, all while being easier to save. When visiting the Great Dismal Swamp one can enjoy a variety of activities such as hiking, biking, wildlife photography, etc.(Citation). The forming of new swamps is something that is already in effect under the DEQ ( Department of Environmental Quality ).
