In the setting of The Hunger Games the people in District 12 are really poor and the people in the Capitol live in luxury. An example of the poor setting in District 12 is; “District Twelve. Where you can starve to death in safety” (7). When Katniss and Peeta were traveling to the games they saw the Capitol as: “They have not quite captured the magnificence of the glistening buildings in a rainbow of hues that tower into the air, the shiny cars that roll down paved streets, the oddly dressed people with bizarre hair and painted faces who never missed a meal” (59).The novel explains how unequal District 12 and the Capitol really are through the setting were District 12 is explained as a place where people don’t have enough to eat and the Capitol to be spectacular with rich people. The character known as Ceaser Flickerman is the interviewer for the hunger games and always looks too perfect. An example of the worlds obsession with appearance is “They do surgery in the Capitol, to make people appear younger and thinner” (124). Ceaser reflects this exactly; “Same face under a coating of pure white makeup. Same hairstyle that he dyes a different colour for each hunger games” (124). The characters from the novel that live in the Capitol all have an obsession with appearance and will be looked down upon if they don’t look perfect.
