How do you feel about that? Imagine waking up every morning and instead of going to school to learn you had to work to make money for your family so you could have something to eat that week. Imagine only being 7 years old and learning that you have no other choice but to work another 3 hours due to your lack of money to put food on the table. Imagine your family members being so sick that they can’t bring themselves out of bed and a 13-year-old has to take care of them and double up on working hours just to pay for some type of medicine or food. A child shouldn’t have to face that, but during the Industrial Revolution, they did. Children performed all kinds of jobs ranging from working on machines in factories to selling newspapers on the sides of streets. Kids didn’t earn half the salary of what normal adults would receive. Some business owners even managed to pay the kids nothing because most kids didn’t have the time to hassle school and learn and the owners used this to their advantage. Business owners hired kids because they were cheap and could do more difficult jobs that adults couldn’t do such as getting into smaller spaces to fix something with a machine. You might not ever be able to see your family besides a passing glance or achieve any sleep at night, but at least you receive your money. Ages 5 and up would work day shifts, night shifts, any shifts they could ask for. People would work 10-14 hours a day, 6 days a week. Families living in confining homes would take different shifts so the others could sleep, if barely. The scarcity of jobs affected people by making them offer ridiculous working conditions to take the job, some even offering to work 20-22 hours a day, 6 days a week. Based on the scarcity of jobs, the working conditions people worked under were ridiculous, and many people were treated like slaves and not human beings by their bosses. Along with the working conditions, most people didn’t have an education and their bosses used this to their advantage and gave them less than what they were promised. Besides the economic problem, the working areas were not only terrible but highly dangerous because most of the machines were unpredictable. If you injured yourself on the job you would be fired and the factory would be forced to close down for a long time and many people would lose their jobs and starve like you. These conditions led to an increase in poverty as many people were left jobless and homeless.
