On February 26th, 2012, Trayvon Martin, a 17-year old African American, was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a 33-year old white man. In response to this incident, a hashtag known as #BLACKLIVESMATTER, was created as a movement to stand up against violence and racism toward black people. Now, millions of organizations and individuals support the Black Lives Matter movement, hoping to promote change in the way black lives have been treated in America. The media has had the biggest impact on the movement from posting footage of some of the various police shootings, to broadcasting open discussions about the movement as a whole. There are so many ways that media outlets have spread awareness about the ongoing issues of police brutality. For example, The Washington Post, Comedy Central, and even celebrities like Beyonce have had input on this specific subject matter. This topic most interest me because it has had a huge impact on myself and other African Americans like myself. About five months ago my brother was stopped and patted down in front of our house by a police officer with a rifle, after walking home from babysitting. They thought he was involved with some shooting that had taken place a few blocks down. Even though they didn’t shoot, I was still hurt by what I saw. This happens in our communities too often and some do not end so well. This is a critical issues in today’s world because more and more innocent black males are being shot and killed by police.
