Video games and Violence Video games have been the pinnacle of modern day entertainment ever since the late 1980’s when it really grabbed the attention of many children seeking entertainment outside of watching television. The only problem with this is that video games like everything else that is popular, has become controversial. The main controversy surrounding video games is that they are considered violent and unsafe for children to play. Video games are also being blamed for inspiring countless acts of horrific crimes such as mass shootings, and murder which most of the time is unjustified and makes no sense. There is no research that proves video games cause violence. Video games are used as a scapegoat for politicians who don’t want to deal with the actual issues such as gun control. To the contrary, studies have proven that video games help people and benefit their lives. Video games have been around since the early 1950s and have been evolving ever since. The arrival of the computer in the late 1950’s allowed the military to use the technology to simulate combat scenarios. The first video “game” ever developed was "Spacewar!” in 1961 by several students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The popularity of video games soared in the early 1980’s when a Japanese company named Nintendo launched a system called the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) bringing gaming into millions of homes at a reasonable price.
