Sexism In Video Games

Superior Essays
The video game industry has always been known as a male-dominated industry, with most video games being marketed towards males and many video game programmers being male. But in recent years, there has been a rise in the number of female gamers in the industry. Although there are a lot of women interested in video games, there are still a lot of problems regarding sexism and the video game industry. Sexism can be found in the video games that girls play as they grow up to women who enter the industry as creators and programmers. An extreme example of this sexism can be found in GamerGate, an event surrounding women working in the video game industry. There has been a lot of progress regarding representation in video games, but there are still …show more content…
A lot of video games are known for scenarios such a male hero saving the princess, and while the stereotype isn’t going to disappear, there are some games where players can play as those princesses that used to be the damsel in distress. In the video game Super Paper Mario, Princess Peach becomes an essential character as the player can play as her throughout most of the video game. One of the most popular games known for having a female protagonist is the series Tomb Raider, but has also been known for her early image being extremely disproportional. Although the character wasn’t the greatest role model for body image, recent games in the series has changed Lara Croft’s image to look more realistic and shows that progress was made. More video games continue to be made each year with female protagonists to counter against the video games that don’t represent women as much, so while it’s a problem that the popular video games don’t represent women, there are still a lot of options for girls who want that representation. Many popular games from the past five years have had women on their box art as the main characters, such as Final Fantasy XIII along with its spin off games Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII featuring the main character Lightning and basing the story around her. Video games are …show more content…
If video games are able to look the same as movies and real live people, then it should be possible to create female characters that look realistic. “Industry and game creators tend to both repeat based on what they are used to, and to live up to what they believe are expectation for future users” (Kondrat, 189), so it’s understood that game developers may have a hard time changing their games for one part of their audience in risk of upsetting the other. But if developers did change their ways and focused on expectations of both female and male players, then it would be a big step towards improvement for other developers and video games. Sega is one of the game companies that knows that change should be made, and Kondrat explains in her article that Sega “tried to introduce a lot of new female heroines into their fighting games, which were originally targeted only to the male gender, and gave them powers which will be engaging for female and male players”. If big game companies like Sega would incorporate female characters into their video games, then it would inspire other game developers to continue the trend and it would become a normal thing for women to be equally represented as men are. Since the increase of female gamers, game companies could shift certain types of games that could appeal to primarily women

Stefan Babich in his article, “The Fall of The Female Protagonist in Kids’ Movies” writes about the idea of a female protagonist dying in the “animation war” (n. pag.). He writes about how in recent days animation movies do not have a female protagonist who isn’t the cookie cutter princess. This is very similar to the view in Amanda Marcotte’s article titled, “The Shocking Radicalism of ‘Brave’” where she talks about how “Brave” is a movie that seemed to try to fall out of the algorithm but eventually is from the same mold of movies that the Disney movies come from (Marcotte n. pag.). Although both Babich and Marcotte have similar views on the topic, Marcotte’s article seems to focus on women 's role in society (which does account for a…

Superhero Comic Books Berlatsky’s article, “The Female Thor and the Female Comic-Book Reader” (2014), argues that girls are interested in reading superhero comics as much as boys; there has been a lot of speculation whether comic books were created to entertain only the masculine audience. In order to stop the sexism that has been going around in the superhero comic book industry, Berlatsky uses the logos Aristotelian appeal to inform the comic book audience that girls have been a fan of comics since decades ago. He also managed in using the hyperbole and aphorism rhetorical strategies to show that boys see girls differently and don’t belong in this industry. As a matter of fact, Berlatsky uses aphorism in one of the first paragraphs.…

For example, in the popular MMO World of Warcraft, lore and myth are male focused and driven. While lore involving female characters can be found, it’s exceedingly more rare, functions as a support for the male lore, or functions as an evil storyline to emphasize the negative qualities of women in comparison to the positive roles of men (Brehm 2013:8). According to Williams, Martins, Consalvo, and Ivory in 2009, the lack of female character representation paired with the emphasis of male character representation attracts men to the games, rather than women, which increases the likelihood that men will take part in the video game making process and perpetuate the cycle of a male dominated gaming industry (Brehm 2013:3). Game Developer Research’s survey in 2007 indicated “that 89% of the professionals in the video game industry were male”, which provides additional support for why male characters are more prominent in games than female characters (Martins, Williams, Harrison, and Ratan 2009:824). This inequality in representation produces a cycle of interaction within the industry and within the consumers that is perpetuated by the lack…

Speaker, Anita Sarkeesian, in her video, Women As a Background Decoration, describes how women in video games are hyper-sexualized and most often recipients of violence. Sarkeesian’s purpose is to point out how women are portrayed as a “Non-Playable Sexual Object” and often degraded. She does an exemplary job at being effective in her argument by appealing to the three main rhetorical strategies and the specific language and style of her piece. Sarkeesian begins her video by firstly addressing that women are identified as objects in games and how this is affecting them in the real world. She challenges the listeners to think if objectifying women is morally acceptable and that they are more than “...decorative elements used to try and…

Although women make-up half of the gaming populace, video games are still referred to as a male pastime, and female gamers are seen challenging women’s gender role. In the public world of gaming, women are often pushed to the sideline of gaming communities because of criticism from the male populace. In the article Hypermasculinity & Dickwolves: The Contentious Role of Women in the New Gaming Public, Salter and Blodgett take a look at how a “male-dominated space” extends “discourse from a virtual to physical world” (Salter). To do this, they analyzed the case of “Dickwolves”, were a gaming website was boycotted by a rape survivor because of their comments about rape.…

In this series, Sarkeesian utilizes many sociological and feminists theories to analyze female tropes in pop culture media (in this case, video games), highlighting how these tropes contribute to harmful and sexist towards women. Many others (i.e. gender activists and feminists) believe that 'harmful' tropes and stereotypes of women in video games can alter the perspectives of male…

Female protagonists, such as the new Star Wars heroine Rey, are not getting the deserved recognition, especially when it comes down to the merchandise business. Most Millennials and the Generation Z, have already accepted the actuality that Star Wars has always been a categorized as a boy movie. From droid armies to severed limbs thanks to plasma blades powered by kyber crystals, how could females appreciate such a film? Certainly, there are some female characters like Princess Leia and Padme Amidala, however, these royal beauties, quite frankly, will never compare to characters like Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker. Not many movies depict women as strong or heroic.…

I found Roxane Gay’s media criticism in Bad Feminist very compelling through her use of humor and pop culture to make powerful arguments about women’s representation in media. When contemplating my own research in feminist video game criticism, I found myself struggling with how I could emphasize the seriousness of harmful depictions of women in interactive media, when gaming is often viewed as a childish or “fluffy” topic. I found Gay’s breakdown of Fifty Shades of Grey in the chapter, “The Trouble with Prince Charming: or He Who Trespassed Against Us,” to balance the dichotomy of “serious” and “fluffy,” quite well. In this section, she analyzes the gendered narratives within the Fifty Shades series and constructs these narratives within fairy tale archetypes. This paragraph serves a close look at the trilogy’s Prince Charming, Christian Grey (page 199-200).…

Many people presume that only guys play video games. When a guy finds out that a girl likes to play video games, they are generally shocked. They believe that even if the girl plays video games, she cannot be good at it and if the girl does beat them they become embarrassed and wonder how they lost to a girl. Carmen Tieu, illustrates in, "Why Violent Video Games Are Good for Girls" that it is okay to be a girl and be good at playing first person shooter games. She explains that playing first person shooter games "allows girls to be freed from feminine stereotypes and increases their confidence," (83).…

Alike the representation of the LGBT community, the representation of femininity in video games can also picture individuals and/or groups in a negative way which influences the way of which members in society view them. Femininity in video games has been more apparent due to the rise of the feminist ideology and the third wave movement. Furthermore, feminine characters are usually portrayed in weaker roles and are more often than not sexualised and objectified. Therefore, this representation illustrates the delusional perceptions of feminine individuals, especially women, within the video gaming industry. This paper will be focusing on the impacts that the representation of femininity in video games has on feminine individuals, including those…

From the opening scene fight scene, the screen displays Lara Croft calmly hanging upside down from a rope (Lara). She displays a don’t-mess-with-me face, and as the fight scene continues it is easy to see that she has earned it. However, looking at the rest of Lara, one cannot help but think that fighting in such tight clothes cannot be comfortable. For once it seemed like there was finally going to be a strong female lead in an action movie that would be a great role model for girls to look up to. Sadly, the movie industry had to ruin this beautiful dream, by dressing the main character in tight clothing.…

The film industry has not ceased to sexualize and objectify women, but merely do so in a different way. This is also very prominent in video games where women are rarely represented and when they are it is in a hypersexualized manner.
