In the online article, “Vermicompost, the story of organic gold: A review,” the author dives into the benefits of vermicomposting by explaining the basics of the concept, and then digs deeper into the values and assets of this “organic gold.” The article states how vermicomposting not only gets rid of food waste in landfills, but also creates the soil that we use to grow our plants. For example, the author states, “Vermicompost is a soil additive made up of digested compost. Worm castings are much higher in nutrients and microbial life. Worm castings

The EPA, or the Environmental Protection Agency, is a United States government organization that was created to to help our environment and ecosystem thrive and to protect our planet. In the twenty-seven page document, the EPA starts off with statistics about the emission rates of harmful compounds such carbon dioxide, methane, and non-methane organic compounds, such as ethanol. They start narrowing down and start focusing on food waste in landfills later in the report. According to the EPA, “When food waste, yard trimmings, paper and wood are landfilled, anaerobic bacteria degrade the materials, producing methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2)[...] In addition to carbon emissions, some of the carbon in these materials (i.e. food waste, yard trimmings, paper, and wood) is stored in the landfill because these materials are not completely decomposed by anaerobic bacteria”(EPA 2). They state that a suitable solution to this problem, is to compost with red worms, also known as “red wigglers”. The information presented in this source will play a key role in my Change Project research because it provides useful scientific information about carbon and methane emissions due to supplemental food waste left in California’s landfills. This source has also provided tremendous amount of statistics that have helped with the visuals of the Change Project.

In the video pollution solution number 2570, Bill Nye helps us try to understand pollution of the earth in the form of toxic wastes, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and noise. He states that the earth is an ecosystem and demonstrates how human beings, industries, and other facilities pollute the earth which is a closed ecosystem. He further states that most of pollution comes from human beings but not big factories and power plants that everyone thinks. This takes place in the form of small vehicle engines, the noise that people make and lawn mower. All these are referred to as non-point source pollution.…

How does this impact the environment? In our compost chamber one of the most prevalent features throughout the check was the presence of slime mold. Slime mold seeks out decaying materials such as wood and leaves to grow on, so it can take up the nutrients. Slime molds are organisms that reproduce with spores, so the rapid spread everywhere in the chamber was one that closely resembles its characteristics (Poinar 1). Slime mold engulfs fungi which is attracted to decayed material, therefore it is reasonable that the slime mold would thrive (Slime Molds1).…

Reducing Food Waste Food and water are two of the most important resources for everyone on the planet. No matter what part of the world people are living in, no matter what their income or living situation is everyone needs these two vital resources to live a healthy life. Unfortunately food is not given the respect that it deserves, as perfectly edible food is unnecessarily thrown out everyday. Whether it is being thrown away at supermarkets, restaurants and even in people’s own homes. Most of the food that is being thrown away is still completely fine to eat, but people feel that it is safer and easier to just throw the food away, instead of taking the risk of getting sick from it or finding other uses for it.…

On a larger scale, an estimated forty percent of the food produced in America is wasted and universities are only contributing to that waste. From an economic standpoint, the food Americans waste every year leads to billions of dollars being pointlessly spent to produce and prepare food that is never consumed. With many families living on tight budgets and the global population continuing to expand every year, the need to reconsider using our limited resources on producing food that is later trashed is immense. These wasted resources, such as water, fertilizer, land, and energy used to produce food are not only affecting the economy but are also part of the environmental consequences of food waste. Such environmental consequences are amplified by the fact that the food taken to landfills rots into methane gas, a potent greenhouse gas with a “high global warming potential.”…

Some people in America witness the disposal of edible food. One may have seen their friends throw away half of their uneaten food in the trash at school or see their parents dispose the fast food that’s about a week old. These scenarios are considered food waste and this is one of the main problems that America faces. If this problem continues, eventually, “in forty years when you order a pizza from Domino’s, they’ll just deliver it straight to the nearest dumpster” (“Last Week Tonight”). There is tons of food that are wasted despite the fact that there are Americans suffering from hunger.…

Anthropocentric idealism is destroying the earth; to believe humans are the most important being on the planet is ridiculous, and extremely selfish. Because of this ideal, non domestic animals are considered of lesser value, and are used for our benefit (whether it be for food, clothing, or other goods.) These animals are not afforded the rights that all living beings deserve- the right to a pain free life and the right to live. This is what vegans fight for, they fight for animal rights, and the end of animal based products to create a healthier and more humane earth. Veganism is a lifestyle that aims to avoid as much abuse and exploitation of animals as possible.…

Trash in our community is a huge problem not only for us, but for the animals in our oceans. To begin, plastic toxins can enter the human food chain and drastically hurt humans and the way their bodies work. “toxins can enter the human food chain through eating seafood and can cause harmful substances to enter the body such as lead, cadmium, and mercury. These toxins are linked directly to cancers, birth defects, immune system problems, childhood developmental issues” (Andrews). Most, if not all toxins are very harmful to the human body, and if you were to consume these toxins, the chances of something going wrong is almost slim to nothing.…

Dumping hazardous wastes into river, ocean, and soil has resulted in a dramatic change in pH of the non-renewable resources and leads to a destruction in the ecosystem. Specially in agriculture, crops cannot grow in acidic soil, so it is crucial to maintain the acidity of the soil at a neutral state. Consequently, farmers use lime fertilizers such as powdered limestone, CaO, or the ashes of burnt wood to neutralize the acid in the soil. However, considering that the change in acids…

Since the appearance of plastic bags in stores in the United States in the late 1970s, they have been presented all over the world. When buying any items from stores, most buyers are served plastic bags to wrap or package. The first plastic bag was invented 150 years ago, soon after, consumers around the world quickly realized that plastic bags were the most common way of packing goods. Plastic bags have such common usage mainly because they are strong and convenient (Hayabuchi et al., 2005). The convenience of plastic bag in daily life is undeniable.…
