Analyzing Teachers' Dispositions towards Diversity: Using Adult Development Theory
The authors of this article explain the effect dispositions of teachers on cultural diversity and how it strongly impacts student learning and development. (Collinson, 1999, Combs, Newman, and Wass, 1974) In the article they ask why some teachers demonstrate cultural sensitivity while others were stuck in the stereotypes, denying diversity issues in the classroom. The authors research looked at various approaches and strategies to find out where a persons dispositions stem from. They research this by using adult development theory and focusing on Kegans 5 Orders of Consciousness (1998). The 5 Orders of Concieousness in Kegans developmental theory are 1st is Perceptions, 2nd is Concrete, the 3rd is Abstractions, 4th is Abstract Systems, and the rarest to be reached is the 5th, Dialectal. The first and second are seen to be egocentric whole the third and fourth are ethnocentric. The fifth being worldcentric, this is reached to ones self and extended to all people. This article furthered into how teachers, particularly professors, can identify their students developmental level of consciousness. Most of our thinking ranges from the 2nd to the 4th scale of consciousness when 5th is the hardest and most ideal to be reached. They applied Kegans theory by setting up a study using two teaching case studies and two groups of students both enrolled in 4 year colleges, both with different diversity levels. They gave these teaching cases based on cultural diversity in a classroom and were asked to respond to the case. The two cases were called
