The development of nursing theories may start in so many ways. A theory may be developed from a conceptual framework based on other disciplines (deductively) or through observation (inductively). When it comes to active aging, the concept was initially inspired by the work of Robert Havighurst on activity theory. According to this theory, elders' well-being relies on them staying active in later life; therefore, staying active is key to successfully ageing (Functionalist, 2017). However, in 2002 the World Health Organization (WHO) reintroduced the concept by accentuating on the prevention of health problems. The concept was then extended to elders being engaged in their communities through volunteering, and their family.
