The Fight against Racism

Racism has been around for thousands of years. Its roots can even be traced back to the biblical days. Living in our society today, it’s not easy coping with the burdens of this problem. Racism is defined as the belief that one race is superior over another because of the race they are born into. Racism affects all races in our country, not just black or white. Standing up against this disease that is slowing destroying humanity starts with us. The black race was known as the worst race there was and the citizens were fed up with being treated as such. This quickly birthed the civil rights era. This was an era were the African American was struggling to become free from racial injustice against them and other races as well. There were many fighters in this battle, but there was one that stood out amongst the rest that went above and beyond the call of duty. This young man was named Martin Luther King Jr. He was a black pastor from the south were the problems of racism was at its peak. Dr. King fought for racial equality until he succumbed by being shot in Memphis TN. on April, 4 1968. In 1988, when a residential treatment center opened in Indianapolis for convicted child molesters, neighbors accepted it with little comment. But three years later, when it was converted into a facility for homeless veterans half of them black neighborhood whites vandalized a car and burned a cross. Many white Americans believe that race no longer matters in America, now that public schools have been integrated, blacks can vote and race-based job and housing discrimination are illegal. The issue of racism is still relevant today. As a society we must look at ourselves before we point the finger at anyone. Accomplishing the fight against racism could take years, but we have to continue to work towards bettering ourselves.
