The expected pattern of children and young people’s development from birth to 19 years has many areas of development, starting from birth.

0-3 years
Social, emotional and behavioural development

5-8 years
Social, emotional and behavioural development
At the age of 5 children want the approval of adults, they begin to prefer different sorts of games, show a good control of emotions but can be very emotional at times, they can play as a group or on their own, they can respond to instructions and discipline but they can also argue back.
At the ages of 6 & 7 years children are more independent and confident, they can become argumentative or aggressive, they can become very attached to their own belongings and not want to share, their attention span may divert if kept doing the same things for long amounts of time as they are used to the free flow of being in nursery and reception classes. They can also become very miserable and angry when they are unable to do things.
At the age of 8 they begin to concentrate on other people’s feelings, they understand fairness and can understand right from wrong; they also begin comparing themselves to others and how they look and they may choose to release their feelings by drawing or acting out .

Physical development
5- to 8-year-olds have slower growth rates as compared to children in the early childhood years so you will notice their growth slowing down. They begin to refine their large and small motor skills including moving around and painting and puzzles, resulting in greater control of their bodies and better skills so they can gradually become
