The definition of child development is ‘the biological and psychological developments in human beings between birth and the end of adolescence’. This essay will look further and discuss key issues regarding children and young people’s development.
Children and young people’s development is influenced by arrange of personal factors which is increasingly being informed by genetics. For example a child’s hair will be decided genetically. Although the child’s height will also be decided genetically, their later environment and diet will affect this. A baby’s development can be influenced during the mother’s pregnancy if the mother smokes, uses alcohol or drugs. Stress and anxiety can also have an affect or infections such as rubella can have an effect during pregnancy. Brain function can affect the baby’s development which is caused by injury during birth, pre- mature babies or a baby who does not breathe straight away. A child who has specific difficulties whether they are physical or mental may feel or be disadvantaged in certain areas of development. However if this is supported correctly it may be avoidable.
