Taking The Uniquely You assessment online I learned that I am an inspirational specialist I/S and what is expected of me is steady influencers S/I (Carbonell, 2013). When people are around me they think of me as a people person by being a loyal friend but less relational. I am more of a relaxed person which lets people feel comfortable to come to me with their problems. On the DISC assessment of this is me it states that my passion is supporting others are is true, but when it comes to listening effectively, it can become a problem (Carbonell, 2013). Listening is an important part of communication. Reading Petersen’s book, it hit me that I’m not the best listener. Personally, have been thinking of different situations that I have interrupted an individual who was speaking about a situation. I thought of several, one that came to mind was a friend had to go in for emergency surgery, she came to me to voice her concerns because of my medical experience as well I just went through two major surgeries. While she was speaking and telling her concerns, I jump in to answer one when I should have waited. According to Petersen (2007), “Recognizing our tendency to interrupt, change the subject, give opinions, make suggestions, or argue, give us a chance to keep ourselves from leaning into someone else’s sentence (p.54). Now that I recognize this tendency I start to bite my tongue and to let the other person continue. According to Stewart (2012), people must express their thoughts and feelings to each other to help build stronger relationships and listening is a key without interruption of successful interpersonal communication. Personally, I’m using the tools that this class had given me to become a better listener. One tool that I started using is the talker-listener
